Response from Enfamil.com

This is the response I received from Enfamil.com regarding the powder formula. I am doing what they say, but it still doesn't work, so I think I will stick with the ready to use or concentrate, but at least I am getting 3 free cans of the ready to use!! Right on!! At least I know not to use boiling water to dissolve the powder unless I am ready to use the bottle right away.

Dear Ms. Sherilyn Spiegel: Thank you for contacting Mead Johnson through the Internet. It is a pleasure to hear from our customers, and we hope you will contact us whenever you need assistance. I apologize that you experienced a problem with the Enfamil® Nutramigen® Lipil® Powder 1 lb.. Mixing Hints for Powder: To allow for adequate head space and mixing room in the bottle, do not mix more than 6 fluid ounces of formula in an 8 fluid ounce bottle, and 2 fluid ounces in the 4 fluid ounce bottle. Always pour the water into your mixing container first, and then add the powder to the water. Shake the bottle vigorously immediately after adding the powder. Let the bottle sit for approximately 5 minutes. Vigorously shake the bottle again prior to feeding. Remember, the formula prepared from powder should be fed within 24 hours of refrigerated storage, after which any remaining formula should be discarded. ( Adding the powder to the water without shaking forms a starch-like "casing" around the powder making it harder to mix.) Water used to mix concentrated liquid or powder formula can be room temperature or cooler to decrease conditions favorable to bacterial growth. Our powdered formulas will mix well with room temperature (75° F) or even cooler water. If desired, you may use warm water (about 100° F or body temperature) but only if you feed the bottle right away and discard any formula remaining after one hour. Another reason to avoid using hot tap water is that the hot water usually contains higher levels of lead in older homes with metal water pipes. Do not mix our formulas with boiling water because of clumping or separation and nutrient degradation. Do not boil our formulas after preparing them because of nutrient degradation. We appreciate your bringing this to our attention. Without seeing the product, it is hard to speculate why the product is not dissolving. I will record your report and relay this information to our Quality Services department. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you. We recommend that you not use any product if you are uncomfortable with it. We would expect a baby to accept and tolerate all forms equally. Ready- To-Use and Concentrated Liquid formulas appear darker and thicker than formula prepared from powder. This is due to the heat sterilization process the liquids undergo. Powdered infant formulas are not sterile, and should not be fed to premature infants or infants who might have immune problems unless directed and supervised by the baby’s doctor. Ask your baby’s doctor which formula is appropriate for your baby. When powder or liquids are prepared according to directions, they are nutritionally equivalent. You may see additional ingredients (carrageenan, monoglycerides and diglycerides, acetylated monoglycerides and sometimes soy lecithin) in our liquid formulas. These are used to keep our liquid formulas mixed throughout their shelf- life. The order of ingredients in the ingredient listing will vary somewhat among the different forms of the same product. I have made arrangements to send you three cans of Ready To Use. Your product should arrive via FedEx within two weeks. In order to complete our records we would appreciate your assistance by completing the information form (attached). This information will help us record an accurate and detailed description of your experience with our product. As a token of our appreciation we will be happy to send coupons. If you have further questions regarding the information provided above, please feel free to contact us via the Internet again or call us toll- free at 1-800-222-9123 and ask to speak with one of our Product Information Associates.
